Skilled Nursing
These facilities have typically been referred to as “nursing homes” by most people. Skilled nursing facilities customarily staffed and equipped to provide around-the-clock medical care and support. Seniors with specific healthcare needs, such as requiring the expertise of doctors, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, or occupational therapists, have the opportunity to receive specialized care within the comforting confines of these facilities. These facilities primarily rely on funding from Medicare and Medicaid programs. However, nursing homes are typically utilized for short-term rehabilitation rather than long-term care, unless the senior is enrolled in a Medicaid program.
In many cases, memory care homes and assisted living facilities offer comprehensive support that meets the needs of seniors without necessitating a transition to a nursing home. Nursing homes often represent a more restrictive option for older individuals. Typically, payment from skilled nursing is covered by insurance or other means, such as Medicaid and Medicare.
